PROJECT CASE STUDY

Welder qualification testing using flexible scope of accreditation

The Brief

ASAMS were engaged by a UK‑based subsea services provider to deliver a rapid, compliant welder qualification testing solution to AWS D3.6 for underwater welding. Although ASAMS is not directly accredited to this code, the laboratory’s flexible scope of ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and established relationships with specialist NDT providers enabled a fully integrated, single‑point service. All mechanical testing and associated NDT were completed within three days of coupon receipt, with same‑day reporting issued by ASAMS. This allowed the client to qualify welders at short notice and mobilise resources quickly in response to changing project schedules.

Client Overview
UK‑based subsea services provider delivering inspection, repair and maintenance and offshore construction services, including air and saturation diving, ROV and survey operations, and hyperbaric testing.

The Challenge

The client required welder qualification testing to AWS D3.6 for underwater welding at short notice, creating potential risks to mobilisation schedules and project delivery. While AWS D3.6 sits outside ASAMS’ direct accreditation, the laboratory’s ISO 17025 flexible scope and established relationships with specialist NDT providers enabled a fully compliant, single‑point testing solution to be delivered without delay.

Applicable Codes and Standards
AWS D3.6 – Specification for Underwater Welding

Our Approach

ASAMS’ experienced laboratory team reviewed the requirements of AWS D3.6, identified the applicable testing regime, and confirmed coverage under the laboratory’s ISO/IEC 17025 flexible scope. Required NDT was coordinated through a trusted local partner, allowing ASAMS to manage the full programme as a single point of contact. Clear planning and efficient scheduling ensured all testing was completed within the agreed turnaround.

The Result

Key Outcomes & Client Benefits
All testing met the AWS D3.6 acceptance criteria and was completed on time and on budget. Mechanical testing was completed within three days of coupon receipt, with ASAMS reports issued the same day and NDT reports forwarded upon availability. The client benefited from a fully managed testing programme, reducing administrative burden and enabling rapid qualification of welders.

What This Means for the Client
The client was able to mobilise qualified welders at short notice, maintaining flexibility in the face of changing project schedules and strengthening their ability to respond quickly to end‑client demands.
