The Brief
ASAMS was contracted by Forsyths Limited to carry out a comprehensive dissimilar super duplex butt weld procedure qualification to ASME VIII, ASME IX, and a client‑specific project specification. The scope required careful alignment of multiple standards, resolution of specification conflicts, and full coverage of all mechanical, metallurgical, and corrosion testing requirements. To reduce commercial risk, ASAMS adopted a staged testing approach, prioritising corrosion and microstructural examinations where the client had previously experienced failures. All testing was successfully completed within seven days, with results issued the same day, enabling Forsyths to meet project deadlines with full confidence in compliance and weld integrity.
Client Overview
Forsyths Limited is a globally recognised engineering specialist delivering bespoke fabrication solutions across the distillation, oil & gas, renewables, and wider process industries.
The Challenge
Forsyths required a dissimilar super duplex butt weld procedure qualification to ASME VIII, ASME IX, and a client‑specific specification. The challenge lay in aligning multiple standards, ensuring full coverage of all testing and acceptance requirements, and resolving potential conflicts that could otherwise lead to costly re‑testing or project delays.
Applicable Codes and Standards
ASME IX
ASME VIII
Client project specification
ASTM A370
ASTM E92
ASTM E562
ASTM G48
ASAMS OP07 (Micro examination)
Our Approach
ASAMS began by receiving the weld coupon and ensuring all sampling locations met the applicable specification requirements. A staged testing strategy was agreed with the client, prioritising corrosion testing and microstructural examination to minimise the commercial impact should early‑stage failures occur.
Following successful completion of these critical tests, the remaining mechanical and metallurgical samples were prepared, with all specimens uniquely identified to maintain full traceability. All testing was carried out in accordance with the relevant accredited standards and in the presence of the client‑nominated witness.

The Result
Key Outcomes & Client Benefits
All testing met the applicable standards and acceptance criteria. Results were presented in a clear, comprehensive test report, including high‑quality images where required, and issued to the client on the same day testing was completed.
From receipt of the coupon, the full programme was completed within seven days, enabling Forsyths to submit compliant documentation to their client without impacting the project schedule.
What This Means for the Client
Forsyths were able to meet critical project deadlines while significantly reducing the financial and programme risk associated with potential test failures.
